Offshore Support Vessels
Tugboats, essential for manoeuvring larger vessels in harbors, ports, and waterways, are typically powered by diesel engines due to the high torque requirements of their operations. However, these powerful engines emit substantial amounts of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other pollutants, contributing significantly to carbon emissions in the maritime sector. Given their frequent operation in and around populated coastal areas, tugboat emissions can also impact local air quality, releasing particulate matter and nitrogen oxides (NOx) that contribute to environmental and health concerns.
Medha designs and manufactures turnkey electric thruster and pod propulsion unit, energy storage and power management systems for the electrification of Tugboats. The electrification solutions can be customised to each application and can vary from series or parallel hybrid solution to complete battery electric.
Medha’s electric solution supports the carbon footprint reduction of tugboat operations, align with global decarbonization goals, and support sustainable port operations. Transitioning to greener tugboat technology is seen as a key step in reducing maritime emissions and fostering cleaner coastal environments.
