Decarbonisation is a progressive journey, marked by key milestones such as emission reductions, achieving net zero, and ultimately reaching true zero.
Numerous measures can enhance the efficiency of existing rollingstock fleets, from simple upgrades such as transitioning to microprocessor-based train controls, implementing modern DC chopper systems with regeneration, shifting to AC propulsion, or repowering with battery-electric or hydrogen solutions. Supplementing a rollingstock with an E-Tender car either as a separate wagon for locomotive, or by activating the inactive coaches in passenger rollingstock, or adopting entirely new zero-emission rolling stock are larger interventions with greater benefits.
Medha offers a comprehensive range of solutions across this spectrum, positioning ourselves as a trusted partner for organizations committed to forward-thinking decarbonisation strategies.
Battery Electric Locomotive.
Battery Electric locomotives (BELs) use on board battery storage to power the traction motors to propel the train. Medha offers new Battery Electric Locomotives, and is a pioneer in conversion of legacy Diesel locomotives with either DC or AC traction motors to Battery Electric.
The selection of battery chemistry, and thus the balance between energy and power density, is determined by the locomotive’s operational requirements and its application. For example, freight locomotives prioritize high energy density to support long-distance travel, while passenger locomotives demand high power density for frequent start-stop operations. Medha’s advanced electric propulsion technology is designed to adapt seamlessly to future advancements in battery technology, ensuring long-term compatibility and efficiency.
Medha has BEL solutions for applications such as small industrial locomotives, shunters, intermodal, and heavy haul.
Hydrogen Locomotive.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell locomotives (HELs) uses fuel cells supplemented by battery to power its traction motors to propel the train. Medha designs and builds Hydrogen locomotive and is currently building Hydrogen locomotives inhouse that is slated for trials shortly.
Battery Electric Multiple Unit.
Battery Electric Multiple Units (BEMUs) are self-propelled train sets that use electricity from onboard battery storage. They consist of multiple carriages, multiple of them with its own traction motors. Medha’s BEMU solution can be interspersed with DEMU carriages to enable opportunistic switching between Diesel and Battery to reduce pollution in urban regions.
E- Tender Car.
Medha develops E-Tender car solutions designed to supplement existing diesel locomotives with electric power. The electric power source can be configured to draw from either overhead catenary systems or onboard battery storage. This innovative solution is ideal for routes with intermittent electrification or where external shore charging infrastructure is available. Medha has presented proposals for this concept, showcasing its potential to enhance operational flexibility and sustainability
ZEBHRA Traction converter.
ZEBHRA(™) is Medha’s modern efficient traction converter for Zero emission applications. ZEBHRA is a combo converter with Generator Power Converter, Motor Power Converter, Traction Battery Buck-Boost Converter, Auxiliary Power Inverter, 24 V DC Battery Charger, Drive Control Unit, and Dynamic Braking and Voltage Limit Unit, all in one cabinet.
Traction Battery Storage.
Traction batteries are high capacity energy storage systems (ESS) to power locomotives or train consists. Medha designs, manufactures and supplies Battery Packs, Battery Management Systems (BMS) and Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS) for rail, road, marine and special vehicle applications.
