Medha is proud to announce its continued collaboration with Midwest Terminals of Toledo International on their innovative project to convert diesel-powered locomotives to battery-electric operation at the Port of Toledo. This project represents a significant step towards cleaner and more sustainable port operations in the USA.

Following the successful conversion of Engine 205, which entered service in July 2023, we are now undertaking the conversion of Engine 703. This locomotive will be equipped with a state-of-the-art battery bank, replacing the traditional diesel engine block. The project is funded in part by a substantial grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, recognizing the environmental benefits of this technology.

The battery-powered locomotive offers several advantages over its diesel counterpart:

  • Reduced Emissions: The electric propulsion system eliminates air and noise pollution, contributing to a cleaner port environment.
  • Improved Efficiency: Battery power offers greater efficiency compared to diesel, reducing energy consumption and operating costs.
  • Smoother Operation: The electric engine provides smoother operation, minimizing impact on the rail infrastructure.
  • Reduced Maintenance: Battery-powered locomotives require less routine maintenance than diesel locomotives, lowering overall maintenance costs.

Continued Innovation in Port Operations

While the initial focus is on battery technology, we remain committed to exploring alternative solutions for future conversions. As Mr. Audet, a strategic planning consultant for Midwest Terminals, acknowledges, hydrogen fuel cell technology holds promise for the future.
