Medha successfully converts the EMD GP9 Diesel Locomotive to a first-of-its-kind Battery Electric model in the USA, marking a pioneering step in sustainable rail technology.
Medha successfully converted two 1950s locomotives, the SW1200 and SW1500, into state-of-the-art battery-electric locomotives in Texas, USA, in July 2023, with commissioning completed in September 2023. This project showcases a proven model for adaptive reuse and offers an accelerated pathway to decarbonization.
Building on the success of the initial battery-electric conversion of the EMD GP9 locomotive, Midwest Terminals has awarded a follow-up conversion project. Built in 1965, and known as Engine 703, this locomotive will reincarnate as a battery-electric unit, featuring a cutting-edge battery bank, Power Converters, Drivers cab and modern safety features in place of the conventional diesel engine block. The project is partially funded by a grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, acknowledging the environmental advantages of this clean technology.
