DEMU’s are self-propelled train sets that use diesel engines to generate electricity, which then powers electric traction motors to move the train. DEMU’s are used in non electrified routes for suburban and regional services, in rural and remote areas, and as a backup or auxiliary services on electrified routes providing additional capacity or serving routes during maintenance or emergencies on the main electrified lines.
Sixteen new DEMU trainsets have been delivered to Sri Lankan Railways by ICF, equipped with Medha’s comprehensive Traction System, including the Diesel engine, Alternator, Traction Converter, Auxiliary Converter, Traction Motor, TCMS, PA/PIS, Driver’s desk, and Remote Monitoring features.
