Medha’s Speed and Event Recorders are advanced, high-precision devices designed for use across all types of rail vehicles. Similar to the black-boxes used in aircraft, these recorders capture critical data related to train operations, which becomes invaluable for performance analysis, driver monitoring, and accident investigation.
A Legacy of Innovation
Medha introduced its first Speed Time Distance Recorder (MRT 912) in 1989, pioneering the use of microprocessor-based technology for railway applications. This innovation replaced mechanical speed recorders with digital systems, offering greater accuracy and reliability. Today, Medha’s speed recorders are available in various models, tailored to meet the specific requirements of different rail vehicles.
Key Features
- Real-Time Data Recording: Captures speed, time, and distance continuously, using an axle-mounted speed sensor. The sensor generates a signal proportional to the axle’s RPM, which the microcontroller processes to compute speed and distance.
- Comprehensive Monitoring: Records key operational parameters such as motoring status, dynamic brake application, throttle position, horn status, and more. These inputs are displayed on the recorder and transmitted to indicator units mounted in additional driver cabs.
- Crashworthy Data Storage: Utilizes non-volatile EEPROM or flash memory, designed to withstand extreme conditions, ensuring the integrity of the recorded data during accidents.
- Plug-In Memory Card: Supports easy data transfer and analysis through an external memory card that stores operational logs and event data.
Event Recorders
Medha’s Event Recorders (ER) are on-board devices specifically designed to log detailed event data about train performance and operation. The recorded data serves multiple purposes:
- Accident Investigation: Provides crucial evidence to determine the cause of accidents or incidents.
- Operational Analysis: Helps monitor train performance over time, enabling fleet managers to assess the general condition of the train.
- Distance and Speed Calculation: Accurately calculates the train’s speed and distance travelled, aiding in operational planning and analysis.
Benefits
- Enhanced Safety: Continuous monitoring and data logging improve the safety of train operations by providing insights into driver behaviour and system performance.
- Reliable Data Storage: Crashworthy memory modules ensure data integrity even in the event of severe impacts.
- Compliance with International Standards: Designed to meet stringent railway industry standards, supporting legal and judicial requirements for accident investigations.
- Flexible Integration: Available in various configurations to suit different types of rail vehicles and applications, from passenger trains to freight locomotives.
